Gavins Point Dam
About the Project
Gavins Point Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Missouri River in the U.S. states of Nebraska and South Dakota. Built from 1952 to 1957, it impounds Lewis and Clark Lake. The dam is on the Nebraska-South Dakota border, west of Yankton, South Dakota. During the 2011 Missouri River Flood the dam was damaged by debris. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers soon began repairs to the dam and its spillway gates which KGC played a role in.
Work included visual Hydraulic Steel Structure (HSS) inspection of stoplogs and tainter gates, 3-D modeling and analysis utilizing STAAD.Pro software, non-destructive testing, structural repair design, welding (per AWS D1.5M/D1.5), corrosion repair, abrasive blasting, lead-based paint removal over and on water, wire rope replacement, cathodic protection removal and installation. QP1/QP2 certification were required.
